NOT to be used for translating your paragraphs from English to Spanish to turn in for a grade.  You may use this site to translate a website written entirely in Spanish or French into English so you can get an idea of what it's talking about.  CAUTION:  It will translate words literally and miss many idioms, so even if you use it to cheat on your homework, any Spanish speaker (and your teacher) will know.

    Word Reference
The WordReference Dictionaries are free online translation dictionaries.  The most popular dictionaries are the Spanish Dictionary, French Dictionary and the Italian Dictionary.

      Grammar Reteaching Tutorials
If you are ever having trouble with a specific area of grammar, obviously you should feel free to email me, call me, or ask me any questions you may have in class. However, we all learn differently. Occasionally, you may find that you're just not understanding it as well as you'd like the way your book or I have explained it to you.

At those times, this is a site I recommend for a succint summary of each grammatical concept. There are full explanations that can be read online or printed out easily, and there are a few simple practices available for FREE with each concept. A full list is available on their website, but some commonly used lessons are the following:
      - The Contrasting Uses of Ser and Estar
      - Direct and Indirect Object Pronouns Used Together
      - Por and Para
      - The Contrasting Uses of Ser and Estar
      - Reflexive Verbs: Part One
      - Reflexive Verbs: Part Two
      - Review: Preterite vs. Imperfect
      - Introduction to the Subjunctive
      - Relative Pronouns "el que" and "lo que"
      - The Past Participle
      - The Present Perfect
      - The Conditional

      SAT II Spanish Tests
There are two Spanish Subject Tests:  Spanish ($29) and Spanish with Listening ($40).  Both tests evaluate your reading ability in Spanish.  The Spanish Test with Listening also measures your ability to understand spoken Spanish, in addition to your reading ability.  Find out more about taking the listening tests ($40).

      Recommended Prep
Three to four years of Spanish language study in high school (or two years of strong preparation), or the equivalent.

Read and understand the practice test instructions, question style, and why the right answers are the most appropriate inside the SAT Subject Tests Preparation Booklet (p. 73-77).

When should you take the Spanish test?
There are a few factors to consider while you're deciding when to take the test.

      • You should have at least two years of strong preparation in the language, but the more the better. So, if you're continuing in high school Spanish next semester/year, then wait to take the test.
      • You should be in a Spanish class when you take the test. You're likely not to do as well if you take the test after you haven't been in a Spanish class for several months.
      • For seniors studying Spanish: if Spanish is a strong subject for you, be sure it's one of the SAT Subject Tests you take in time for your colleges to see your score. If you're only taking it for placement purposes, and not as part of your application for admission, wait until you're as far along in your course as possible.
      • If you want to take the Spanish with Listening test, remember that it's only given in November (don't forget to bring a portable CD player with earphones!).
